As a Naturopath and a passionate advocate for a plant-based diet, I believe that everyone should include sweet potatoes in their diet. Not only are they delicious, but they are also packed with nutrients that can benefit your health in numerous ways. Here are my top five reasons why everyone should eat sweet potatoes:
1 Nutrient-Dense
Sweet potatoes are a great source of vitamins and minerals. They are high in vitamin A, vitamin C, manganese, and potassium. Vitamin A is essential for eye health, while vitamin C helps boost the immune system. Manganese is important for bone health, and potassium helps regulate blood pressure. So, if you’re looking for a food that is packed with nutrients, sweet potatoes are a great choice.
2 High in Fibre
Sweet potatoes are also high in fibre, which is important for digestive health. Fibre helps regulate bowel movements, prevents constipation, and may even reduce the risk of colon cancer. It also helps you feel full for longer, which can aid in weight management.
3 Low Glycaemic Index
Despite being sweet in taste, sweet potatoes have a low glycaemic index (GI). This means they won’t cause a spike in blood sugar levels, making them a great option for people with diabetes or anyone looking to maintain stable blood sugar levels.
4 Versatile
Sweet potatoes are incredibly versatile and can be prepared in a variety of ways. They can be baked, boiled, mashed, or roasted. You can even spiralize them to make sweet potato noodles! You can also add them to soups, stews, or salads. The possibilities are endless!
5 Avoid the Unhealthy Add-Ons
Now, while sweet potatoes are incredibly healthy, it’s important to note that how you prepare them can impact their health benefits, it can add extra calories and negate some of the health benefits. Try seasoning them with herbs and spices or using healthier toppings like hummus or guacamole. I like to top mine with a chickpea mash of some kind.
So, there you have it! Sweet potatoes are a delicious and nutritious food that everyone should include in their diet. Try adding them to your meals in new and creative ways to reap all of their benefits. If you’re not a fan of sweet potatoes, don’t give up just yet. Experiment with different preparations and seasonings until you find a way that you love, also there are more than just one type of sweet potato my personal favourites are the purple Hawaiian ones. Your taste buds and your body will thank you!
